MoMoLo and her Family take a Walk with the Humans.

Mo Mo Lo came back home to the jungle just before the pandemic in 2019. It’s been 4 years since I last saw her. As I spend time with her in 2024 I feel her ease. She has had time to heal.

She has a bell on her neck, so the mahouts can locate them in the jungle. They can be so stealth and quiet. The dexterity and skill shows how their bodies are made for the mountain jungles. The mahouts keep them safe, mainly from going into land that has been clear cut and mono cropped with Taro. It is unfortunate that agribusiness clearcuts their habitat. None of this ever benefits the place or community.

We walked with MoMoLo and her two month old. A younger pregnant beauty named, Bautong, spends her days with them. She is considered the auntie. They both care for the little one. The baby nurses on both of them.

We were walking in the clouds, soft rain floating in the air with elephants, with a baby elephant. She acted shy just like a toddler getting tangled up hiding in her moms legs.

With her incredible trunk, Mo Mo Lo pulls down vines from high above. A moment later, she sweeps her trunk around the base of a palm tree, leans it over and pulls it out of the ground. She seeks out the dried leaves scattered in the forests duff with the tip of her trunk so gently that the leaf does not crumble. She’ll use the end of her trunk with her foot and shovel up the dirt, then throw it over her back to protect her skin from the sun and mosquitoes. She sleeps when she wants, she moves when she wants. She lives as she pleases.

Thank you to Jennifer and Rocky for the photos.

We come here to witness, to be educated, and to support the elephants living in their natural habitat. This is a win win story. Perhaps, someday, you will come meet the elephants in this way.
Thank you for caring.
